Christmas Eve Family/Children's Service
December 24, 2022 - 5pm
An Evening Prayer Service
For Our Families and Children
Celebrating the Light of Christ Coming Into Our Lives
Prelude: “Of the Father's Love Begotten” ~ W. Held
Ringing of the Bell
Hymn: "O Come, All Ye Faithful" ~Hymnal 83 verses 1, 2, 3
Opening Sentence:
Officiant: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord
All: Thanks be to God.
Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:5-6
Officiant: It is not ourselves that we proclaim; we proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants, for Jesus' sake. For the same God who said, "Out of darkness let light shine," has caused his light to shine within us, to give the light of revelation - the revelation of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The Prayer for Light
Officiant: Let us pray.
Almighty God, we give you thanks for surrounding us, as daylight fades, with the brightness of the vesper light; and we implore you of your great mercy that, as you enfold us with the radiance of this light, so you would shine into our hearts the brightness of your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect for the Feast of Christmas Day
Officiant: O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
The candles at the Altar and other candles are now lit.
(During the candle-lighting…)
Anthem: O Gracious Light Phos hilaron (recited)
O gracious light,
pure brightness of the ever living Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of Life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

when it was very quiet
the Word was with God
All: AND WHAT GOD WAS, THE WORD WAS
(a Bible is placed centrally)
Leader: In the beginning
when it was very dark,
God said, 'Let there be light,'

You keep us waiting ....
you, the God of all time,
want us to wait for the right time
in which to discover
who we are,
where we must go,
who will be with us
and what we must do.
All: SO, THANK YOU...
FOR THE WAITING TIME.
Leader: You keep us looking...
you, the God of all space,
want us to look in the right and the wrong places
for signs of hope,
for people who are hopeless,
for visions of a better world
which will appear among the disappointments
of the world we know.
All: SO, THANK YOU…
FOR THE LOOKING TIME.
Leader: You keep us loving…
you, the God whose name is love,
wants us to be like you -
to love the loveless and the unloved and the unlovely;
to love without jealousy or design or threat;
and most difficult of all,
to love ourselves.
All: SO, THANK YOU…
FOR THE LOVING TIME
Leader: And in all this,
you keep us…
through the hard questions with no easy answers,
through failing where we hoped to succeed
and making an impact
when we thought we were useless,
through the patience and encouragement
and love of others,
and through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit,
you keep us.
All: SO, THANK YOU...
FOR THE KEEPING TIME
AND FOR NOW AND FOR EVER.
AMEN
Psalm 34

God's praise will be always on my lips.
All: MY SOUL WILL GLORY IN THE LORD;
LET THE HUMBLE LISTEN AND REJOICE

Together, let us honor God's name.

Hymn: “Angels We Have Heard on High" ~Hymn 96
A reading from Holy Scripture:
Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
All: GLORY TO YOU, LORD CHRIST
Luke 2: 8 -20
Reader: In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
Reader: The Gospel of the Lord
All: Praise to you Lord Christ
Homily: Children's Homily presentation
Canticle: “The Song of Mary: The Magnificat” - Luke 1: 46-55
Gathering Comprehensive Canticle 84 (Red Hymnal)
Prayers:
The Lord's Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Leader: Let us pray
Let us pray for light....
where the dark is doubly dark;
where wrong dresses up as right
and even saints can be distracted;
where life has gone into a tunnel
and all that is known is confusing voices
and stumbling blocks in the darkness;
where faith and hope and love are in ashes,
needing an angel to blow on them
Let us pray for Light.
(we invite your prayers silently or aloud)
Let us pray for a word from the Lord.....
where human words can no longer be trusted;
where voice from the past echo loudly saying,
'You are not one of us'
or 'Keep quiet"
or 'I don't need you any longer'
or 'You never get it right';
where the voice of the church has been like
sweet and sour water coming from the same rock,
saying 'Welcome,' and 'Watch it...';
where the voice of God has seemed silent
or been submerged beneath jargon
Let us pray for a word from the Lord.
(we invite your prayers silently or aloud)
Let us pray for a friend of God…
who will bring encouragement
where there is despair;
who will bring company
where there is loneliness;
who will listen
where a hard truth has to be shared;
who will bring change or conversion
through kindness;
who will speak truth to power;
who will bring the gift
which makes all the difference.
Let us pray for a friend of God...
(we invite your prayers silently or aloud)
Leader: Help us, most Holy One,
to hear you
in the words of scripture
and also to recognize your accent
in the voices of the world.
All: HELP US TO SEE YOU
IN THE GOOD OTHERS DO
AND IN THE NEED
WHICH CALLS FOR LOVE OR JUSTICE
Leader: Help us
to love you
and so to trust you
and to follow you
All: TAKE FROM US ANY DESIRE
FOR RECOGNITION OR REWARD,
AND REPLACE IT WITH QUIET JOY
WHICH COMES FROM KNOWING
THAT WE DO YOUR WILL
AMEN
Leader: God of the watching ones,
the waiting ones,
the prayerful and positive ones,
the angels in heaven,
the child in the womb,
All: GIVE US YOUR BENEDICTION,
YOUR GOOD WORD FOR OUR SOULS
THAT WE MAY REST AND RISE
IN THE KINDNESS OF YOUR COMPANY.
AMEN
Leader: O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Hymn: "Joy To The World! The Lord is Come" ~Hymn 100
Leader: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. May The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

The Word of God
The First Lesson: Isaiah 9:2-7
Lector:
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness--
on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For all the boots of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Lector: The Word of the Lord

Sing to the Lord, all you lands.
Sing to the Lord; Bless his name.

Cantor: Announce his salvation, day after day.
Tell his glory among the nations;
Among all peoples, His wondrous deeds.

Cantor: Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
Let the sea and what fills it resound;
Let the plains be joyful and all that is in them!
Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.
People: "Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord"
Cantor: They shall exult before the Lord, for he comes;
For he comes to rule the earth.
He shall rule the world with justice
And the peoples with his constancy.
People: "Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord"
The Second Lesson: Titus 2:11-14
Lector:
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Gospel Acclamation: "Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!"
Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
The Gospel: Luke 2:1-20
Celebrant:
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon: Father Michael Floyd
Prayer before the Sermon: Lord, you have promised that when two or three gather in your name you will be present with them. We depend on that promise today and pray that you will move among us. Lord, we pray that you have inspired Mike's preparation, that you will enliven his presentation, and that you will empower our application. Amen
The Nicene Creed (all stand) ~BCP 358
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen

The Great Thanksgiving: ~BCP 361
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Celebrant and People: (sung)
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. ~R. Proulx
Celebrant: ~ BCP 362
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again ~R. Proulx

Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
The Great Amen: (sung)

And forgive us our trespasses.
as we forgive those

The Word of God
The First Lesson: Isaiah 9:2-7
Lector:
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness--
on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For all the boots of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Lector: The Word of the Lord
People: Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm: 96

Sing to the Lord, all you lands.
Sing to the Lord; Bless his name.
People: "Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord"
Cantor: Announce his salvation, day after day.
Tell his glory among the nations;
Among all peoples, His wondrous deeds.
People: "Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord"
Cantor: Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
Let the sea and what fills it resound;
Let the plains be joyful and all that is in them!
Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.
People: "Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord"
Cantor: They shall exult before the Lord, for he comes;
Lector: The Word of the Lord

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon: Father Michael Floyd
Prayer before the Sermon: Lord, you have promised that when two or three gather in your name you will be present with them. We depend on that promise today and pray that you will move among us. Lord, we pray that you have inspired Mike's preparation, that you will enliven his presentation, and that you will empower our application. Amen
The Nicene Creed (all stand) ~BCP 358
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
Amen
